A Rare Spanish Stirrup, 16th Century

Of Turkish form, chiseled iron with russet finish, one side with Pegasus leaping over a fire and surrounded with mer-men, the other with a lady in puff-sleeved dress holding a mirror and surrounded by putti astride dragons below and standing putti above, all within moulded borders, the inside with engraved ornament and a pierced chrysanthemum on the foot rest. A very similar pair of stirrups of Charle V are in The Royal Armory Of Madrid, illustrated: A. F. Calvert “Spanish Arms And Armor” plate 196.
